Art History Outings At The VMFA: Ancient & Classical Greece

ArtHistoryPrintables

This month’s outing will take a look at the the art and architecture of ancient and classical Greece. I’ve prepared two scavenger hunts to help us engage with the art more fully!

One will be easy even for little children as it is picture based and gives some of the common symbols used for different gods and goddesses as well as some architectural samples. We’ll be looking at lots of vases of different kinds many of which depict parts of myths so the other thing we’ll be looking for is Greek letters and words as vase makers often labeled the people they drew.

Those pages are available for printout here [download id=”5620″]

I’ll also be bringing some maps of Greece as well as the outline of an amphorae for the children to copy some of the decorative patterns they see. As always please bring something to lean on, a pencil and eraser and review good museum behavior with your children. We’ll meet at 10 am in the Sculpture Garden near the large striped stone! Look forward to seeing you!
