First Sunday in Advent

This year all of the Sundays in Advent fall within the month of December. Since the children and I have started doing the short form of Morning Prayer (from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer) after breakfast I’ve been looking forward to going through the Advent readings with them then as well as with S in the evening.

Once again I will be providing a downloadable bookmark with the readings and collect for the week as well as some other helps for morning and evening prayer.

Here are a few questions for discussion:

  • Advent is at once a remembrance of the waiting of the people of Israel for the birth of Christ and the longing that we now experience as we anticipate his return and the renewal of the whole creation. In what ways can our celebration of Advent reflect both aspects?
  • The colors in liturgical churches change to purple. Why?
