Teaching Children Through Goal Setting

As parents we have a responsibility to teach our children how to be fully functioning adults. We not only need to teach them how to dress and feed themselves we also need to teach them both directly and by example the habits of mind that will make them problem solvers as adults.

Perhaps the preschool years are a little early to start this training, but I don?t think so. As I look around at our society and read reports on education and young adults? abilities after completing high school or college, I am struck again and again by how few problem-solving skills they seem to possess.

Many people do not seem to be able to take a problem, break it down into components, and devise solutions for each component until they have eliminated the original problem.
