Good And Pleasant

Lately I’ve been thinking about the promise that “all things work together for good to those who love God.” I’ve known that verse nearly all my life, but I’ve never really understood it.

After all many, many things have happened in my life that I wouldn’t consider good, haven’t they? Or am I confusing “good” with “pleasant”?

I think I am. And when I do start measuring the “goodness” of my life by how “pleasant” I find any particular part of it I am apt to be discouraged and feel ill-used by God. When however I remind myself that things which are unpleasant often result in good, I know I am blessed beyond all measure…..and can say with the Psalmist “Behold! The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.”

  1. I cling to Romans 8:28. I read it as a promise that God will work to the good even the most terrible, painful circumstances and situations in my life…eventually. I’m not shielded from bad (The rain falls on everyone!), and the bad doesn’t turn into good immediately, but it helps me a little to know that God doesn’t waste my hurts.

It’s important to remember too that the unpleasant things (the bad we experience and/or perceive) are the result of the brokenness of the world. If the world were not broken we would not wonder if God were good…K

  2. Love this! I think you are right on the mark with this. When He says “good,” He includes everything that accomplishes His purposes, because that’s the goal. When I say “good,” I often can mean something quite different. Thank you for linking up!! 🙂
