Rainy Summer: What To Do?

Around here we don’t really have winter. Sure, it snows occasionally but mostly we just have lots of wet, cold days. It’s OK at first, actually kind of nice after the heat of summer but after a while we start talking about all the things we will do “when the weather improves”. Unfortunately this year the weather hasn’t really “improved”. We’re still having several days of rain each week, and it’s cooler than normal (I’m not complaining!) which means that my normal solution for rainy summer days – lots of puddle play- isn’t always possible.

On Monday I saw that it was going to rain again (it had already rained Saturday and Sunday so I knew I would have to pull out some new amusement. I had recently pinned some ideas to my Rainy Days Board on Pinterest, so I clicked through them looking for inspiration and found some ideas for using masking tape to make a maze on the floor.

Perfect! We have old wooden floors that tape won’t hurt and it would be new and hopefully interesting…

I laid out a maze all over the floor and set tasks for the children. Here Mouse and Buggle are racing to pick up pom-poms with salad tongs, without getting out of the lines!

The little boys also had a turn. Jack was more interested in emptying the basket than filling it!

We also jumped through it...

and rolled a ball through it.

After the energy level was down somewhat we brought in a few boxes and used the maze as a road with a tunnel and parking garage.

I left the tape on the floor until evening clean-up time then let Bull pull it up which was a great fine motor exercise for him! Definitely an activity we will do again!
